Seeing Tokyo Through Short Film


Film is one of the effective medium to promote a message or propaganda. Nowadays, starring in a film can boost tourism for a destination. International tourists chose their destination primarily because they saw a film shot in that country. About 10 percent of tourists in the survey cite movies as a factor in deciding on their destination. Paris Je T’aime and New York, I Love You successfully portraying the beauty of Paris and New York with strong story. The Lord of The Rings put New Zealand as one of the must visit destination.
Recently, the Government of Japan through the Tokyo Metropolitan Government in collaboration with the Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia produced three short films in which Tokyo become the setting. These films are:

This short film has duration of 14 minutes. The story is about Erica, a newly graduate conductor applied for a job. His employee is a blind man who captivated with his deceased daughter’s passion in Japanese’ culture. Music and views of Tokyo become the center of the story. The film actually convey more-than-meet-the-eye theme. The film also told about woman in Japan’s society. Overall, the story in this film is not too strong with many unrelated footage.

Two people who do not know each other inadvertently sharing stories about Tokyo. Jenny, an artist who was doing a residency in Tokyo, met with Michael, a photographer who is looking for inspiration in Tokyo. Both spend a day trip together in Tokyo. Through the film, your eyes will wander to every tourist objects in Tokyo. In terms of story, Visual Transit has a simple premise which can be a hit. Jenny and Michael talk about family, contemporary Japanese culture, and being far from home. However, these topics seem to far from the audience. In terms of visuals, the film managed to capture the beautiful and historical sides of Tokyo.

A football team in Tokyo go to the island Kozu to have friendly matches with local teams. The plot is simple and among other films, A Soccer Story has a stronger storyline with supporting footage. It is beautiful to see these kids playing around the neighborhood. You can see the daily life of people who live on the island.
